Akiko Freeman – A pioneer in California wine
In 2024, Akiko Freeman personally introduced this Chardonnay at Restaurant Calistoga (Kamakura) , where the taste, which combines California sophistication with Burgundy elegance, captivated many guests.
Akiko Freeman is the owner and winemaker of Freeman Vineyards & Winery in California and one of the pioneering women in the wine industry. Originally from Tokyo, she founded the winery with her husband Ken Freeman in 2001 and is highly regarded for their elegant winemaking that takes advantage of the cool terroir of Sonoma Coast . In recognition of her achievements, she will receive the Green & White Medal (Agricultural Merit Award) from the Japan Agricultural Association in 2023. She is the first woman to receive this award, and is highly recognized for her contributions to sustainable farming methods and innovation in the California wine industry.
