Black Samurai Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2021

Black Samurai is a brand created by Rui Hachimura, a member of the Los Angeles Lakers, the most successful team in the history of the NBA. Just like basketball, he does not tolerate any compromise in winemaking.

Founded by Far Niente, a hugely popular winery in Napa Valley, the vineyards are managed by Joe Harden, who is also the winemaker for Nickel & Nickel, a famous limited edition product from the Single Vineyard Series, and winemaking is done by Philip Holbrook, Margrit Mondavi's grandson, who currently works at Levick.

Tasting notes

It is energetic yet beautifully elegant, with complex aromas of rose, lavender, cassis, dark chocolate, cherry, plum and graphite, and fresh fruit flavors that are integrated with silky tannins on the palate.

Winery

Black Samurai is a wine brand created by Rui Hachimura, a player for the Los Angeles Lakers, one of the most successful teams in NBA history, based in Los Angeles, California, USA!

In June 2019, Hachimura was selected ninth overall in the NBA draft by the Washington Wizards, becoming the first Japanese player to be selected in the first round. He made an immediate impact on the team as a rookie and was selected to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team. In January 2023, he made a surprise transfer to the prestigious Lakers, where he became a top star in both name and reality.

He has now launched his own brand, Black Samurai, and is active as an icon not only in Japan but around the world. Black Samurai wines will be made by Joe Harden, the winemaker at Nickel & Nickel, founded by Far Niente, a popular Napa Valley winery. Joe has worked on projects for many NBA players, including Rui Hachimura and Golden State Warriors star Klay Thompson.

2019 will be the first vintage, and it is made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Coombsville AVA in Napa Valley, California's renowned wine region.

Rui Hachimura's passion as he continues to challenge himself and strive for greater heights in the top level of the NBA has been embodied in the form of wine, which has finally been released in Japan.

Wine Details

Located in Coombsville, at the southeastern edge of Napa Valley, this vineyard was planted in 2013 and is dry farmed (non-irrigated) and organically farmed. Because it borders San Pablo Bay, it is cooler than other areas of Napa Valley, and daytime temperatures can be 3 to 5 degrees lower than in other AVAs. The soil is mainly volcanic rock and sedimentary soil.

After overnight harvest, the wine is fermented in stainless steel tanks. After fermentation, the wine is soaked for 23 days under temperature control, carefully pressed, and then aged for 18 months in French oak barrels (65% new).
