Jean-Philippe, a successful real estate businessman, happened to purchase land in Oakville, Napa Valley, in 1986. Over the next few years, he sold most of the grapes from this small 57-acre (23ha) vineyard to several neighboring wineries, but he was surprised by the exceptional quality of the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from one small plot (0.5ha) of land, and decided to keep that grape for himself.

Wanting to do something with these wonderful grapes himself, he brought them to Robert Mondavi Winery and asked the employees there for their opinions. As a result, he found that even just that small plot was worth vinifying himself, so he hired Heidi Peterson Barrett, who was still unknown at the time, as winemaker and harvested the first vintage as Screaming Eagle in 1992. After tasting the wine before release, Gene was convinced that he could produce a special wine, so in 1995, he replanted the other plots that had been planted with other grape varieties with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc.

Finally, in 1995, a small amount of the 1992 Screaming Eagle was released, and the name became synonymous with California cult wine. It was a moment that changed the history of Napa Valley wine.

It all started when Robert Parker, the wine critic who was said to be the most influential in the industry, gave the 1992 Screaming Eagle 99 points. Since then, the 1993 Screaming Eagle received 97 points, the 1994 Screaming Eagle received 94 points, the 1995 Screaming Eagle received 99 points, the 1996 Screaming Eagle received 98 points, and the 1997 Screaming Eagle received a perfect score of 100 points. As the most difficult wine to obtain in Napa Valley, it became the object of desire for wine collectors around the world. At an auction in 2000, a magnum bottle of this wine was sold for $500,000 (approximately 53 million yen at the time), which caused a stir.

The momentum continues, and Robert Parker has awarded Screaming Eagle wines a perfect score of 100 points four times (1997, 2007, 2010, and 2012), three near misses of 99 points, and four total scores of 98 points. The 2015 vintage, which has yet to be released, has also received barrel tasting scores of 98-100 points. More than 25 years have passed since the debut vintage, and Screaming Eagle is still as popular as ever, becoming known as "the cult wine."

Currently owned by Stan Kroenke, known for Jonata and The Hilt, the winery has welcomed Michel Laurent as consultant, and from the 2012 vintage onwards, the winery will be managed by the young and talented winemaker, Nick Gizlason.
