Paul Hobbs Cabernet Sauvignon Coombsville Napa Valley - 2021
The winemaker behind Opus One’s first vintage, Paul Hobbs, continues his exploration of Coombsville—one of Napa Valley’s most distinctive appellations.
This Cabernet Sauvignon reflects both his philosophy and the unique character of this region.
Deep ruby with violet hues. Aromas of blueberry and lavender. On the palate, red currant and fig unfold with notes of sage and leather. Bright acidity and fine tannins lead to a mineral finish.
With favorable conditions, the fruit ripens slowly, giving vivid fruit and firm structure—an elegant expression of Coombsville. Awarded 97 points by James Suckling.
His career began at Robert Mondavi, where he also joined the launch of Opus One. Later he founded his own winery, gaining recognition. Named “Winemaker of the Year” in 2000, and in 2013 Forbes honored him as “The Steve Jobs of Wine.”
Today, Paul Hobbs is among the most influential figures in Napa Valley winemaking. With this Coombsville Cabernet, he continues to define elegance and innovation in every glass.

Paul Hobbs began his career as a winemaker in 1978 at Robert Mondavi Winery in Napa Valley. Over the next 25 years, he honed his skills and expertise at Mondavi, Opus One, Simi Winery in Sonoma County, and as a winemaking consultant in Chile and Argentina. During this time, Paul frequently traveled to the major wine regions of Europe, gathering additional techniques and ideas. Paul founded Paul Hobbs Winery in California in 1991, Viña Cobos in Argentina in 1999, and Crossburn Winery in California in 2000.
Growing up one of 11 children, Paul's passion for vineyards was sparked in 1969 when the first grapes were planted on his family's farm in upstate New York. Seeing his dedication to his work, Paul's father quickly made him head of wine growing. Paul's first taste and experience of wines from around the world while attending the University of Notre Dame ignited his passion for what would become his lifelong career as an enologist.
In 1975, he enrolled in a Master's in Food Science at the UC Davis Enology Department. His master's thesis, written on oak barrel aging, attracted considerable attention from the premium wine community. Even today, Paul's knowledge of barrels is unmatched, and it is no exaggeration to say that he is a master of barrel wines. The late Robert Mondavi, who recognized Paul's talent, immediately hired him as a research technician. In 1979, Paul was promoted to winemaker at the winery. In 1981, he was assigned to the winemaking team at Opus One, a position he held for four years.
In 1985, Paul joined Sonoma's historic Simi Winery as assistant winemaker. One of his first assignments was to develop a new style of Cabernet Sauvignon. By treating the fermentation and fruit with care and gentleness, he was able to create a richer, more supple wine that caught the attention of critics and consumers alike. In 1989, he became Vice President and Winemaker, his first opportunity to direct the winemaking program of a premium California winery.
In 1991, together with several partners, Paul Hobbs Winery was established in Sonoma, specializing in craft wines and single vineyard wines from Napa and Sonoma. The winery, designed by a leading architect, was completed in 2003 and is surrounded by 14 acres of its own vineyards, named "Lindsay", where Pinot Noir is grown.
In 1999, Paul founded Viña Cobos Winery in Mendoza, Argentina, which produces ultra-premium wines from the highly acclaimed old vine Marchioli Vineyards, as well as value-range, accessible wines from Felino and Bramare.
In 2000, he launched the Crossburn brand, and now he has built a winery in Sonoma, where he teaches young winemakers the know-how of winemaking. Paul was named "Winemaker of the Year" by the Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine in December 2000, and "Most important winemaker in California" by The Quarterly Review of Wines in 2004. In 2013, he was named "The Steve Jobs of Wine" by the American economic magazine Forbes. Recently, he has also been cultivating Riesling in the Finger Lakes region of New York, where Paul is from.
